Painting on Moss Street
On Saturday, July 17th, Sparky and I were on the highway to Victoria at 7:30 am, eager to get started at the TD Art Gallery Paint-In on Moss Street. By the time we arrived at my location, #94, it was 9:30 am and already both sides of the street were festooned with art hanging in tents and trees, and from street signs and light poles. There was no wind, no clouds and the temperature was climbing - a perfect West Coast summer day. We unloaded my "studio" onto the boulevard and within an hour my tent was up, paintings were hung, portfolio and art cards were on display, and my easel held an unfinished 2’x6’ painting. I had started the painting the previous week. Learning about the process is one of the reasons so many visitors attend the Paint-In, so I made a large colourful sketch of the painting with detailed notes on its colours, composition, light direction, etc., and then added the details I would need to work on the painting. I also photographed the painting at each stage and attached the photographs to a long board, on which I made more notes. I was delighted when parents with toddlers stopped to read and discuss the process with me, but I was thrilled when a ninety-nine year old stopped to have a look. Over the course of the day I met many art loving visitors, visited with many friends, talked until I was hoarse and had a fantastic time! I also made progress on the Lasqueti Island arbutus painting. (I said a couple of weeks and it would be up on my website, but it might be three or four. I promised my family and friends I will take a short break from my easel and enjoy some of the joys of summer.) Thank you to the residents of Moss Street who are a patient and art appreciating group, and who have embraced this event for twenty-three years. Thank you to the neighbour who offered the artists in front of her house the use of her bathroom. And a big thank you to the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, event coordinator Mary-ellen Threadkell, the sponsors and the many volunteers. Cheers, NanaNotch Hill I
